Senate election campaign ends smoothly

PHNOM PENH (Cambodia Herald) -  Cambodia's three-week campaign for Senate elections ended smoothly Friday without any violations until the final day,  National Election Committee (NEC) Secretary General Tep Nitha said.

“We had four complaints and we're resolving those problems,” he said.

Tep Nitha said the situation on election day on Sunday was expected to be normal since the vote is restricted to members of the National Assembly and commune councils.

On Friday, the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) held a big parade in Phnom Penh, a day after the opposition Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) canceled plans for a parade.

Ho Vann, chairman of Phnom Penh council of the SRP, said that the parade was not as important as meeting directly with members in each district.

Exiled party leader Sam Rainsy released a letter from Paris Friday urging his followers to be ready for the election.

Only two political parties are contesting the election.
